The main reason, according to the Sega was the new version of Sonic the Hedgehog which was delayed several times. It was very complicated and expensive, but this wasn't the main reason for its failure. However, it was a failure in the United States and other parts of the world. In Japan, it was a popular platform which was considered a success. The original model was released in Japan in 1994 and in the United States and Europe in 1995.

The Mednafen manual recommends turning on "cd.image_memcache", which isn't an option that MedSat exposes, so you would need to go into "mednafen.cfg", which at this point should be inside MedSat's "Core" folder.

I do have to say that the Mednafen team has been doing a great job with this core. I was using Mednafen back then on Linux, and the Saturn core was something that was added in 2015 - 2016 (something like that?).
Also, Mednafen didn't have Sega Saturn support in 2006. they also added features like hardware rendering and higher resolutions.

Yabause was hot garbage back then, and remained that way for a very long time, as far as compatibility went. But SFF was also a bit esoteric, and requires you to either use real Saturn discs, or mount ISO's through a virtual disc drive. One is SFF, which did have really good compatibility back then, as it was one of the most hardware accurate emulators. What I mean by sketchy, is that back in 2006, there were only really two passable emulators.
